Long Beach Island, New Jersey, 2012

There were a lot of other images facing into the sunrise, and, as is often the case, this was afterward when I thought we were finished making anything interesting.  It was just after dawn, and Beth had gone swimming. My entire family and three dogs were asleep in the house. There wasn’t anyone around, which is why we walk there in the new light. It’s quiet and open. I was probably fixated on the way the gulls stretched out in a slow arc. I don’t think I even noticed her gesture at first, which now seems more interesting than light itself. I was just worried about the guy in the tractor coming down the beach.
