I pulled this photo from a drawer in my studio last week. As I held the picture, I noticed something new. There are edges inside edges of the image; this is a photograph of a photograph! I bought the picture for a dollar a few months ago at a Vintage Paper Fair. It was filed under “Nudes,” and I was a bit shocked to find something so erotic among the docile pin-up girls. I could only think of Bataille as I slipped the picture inside a book in my bag. It is like an echo of the images in The Tears of Eros, an effigy that displays a rendering of sacred ritual, sex, and death.
